Health Care-Associated Pneumonia (Hospital Practice) pdf
Description

Traditionally, pneumonia developing in patients who receive health care services in the outpatient environment, such as nursing homes, long-term care facilities, and dialysis centers, has been classified and treated as community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Recent studies, however, have shown that this type of infection, known as health care-associated pneumonia (HCAP) is distinct from CAP in terms of its epidemiology and etiology, and increases the risk for infection with multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens. A review of available clinical data about HCAP was conducted to determine effective empiric treatment strategies and improve clinical outcomes. Analysis of multi-institutional clinical data showed that mortality associated with HCAP is higher than with CAP, suggesting that patients with HCAP may have been treated as hospitalized patients with CAP and received inappropriate initial empiric antibiotic treatment. All patients presenting to the hospital with suspected HCAP or CAP should Download Health Care-Associated Pneumonia (Hospital Practice) for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

Is Inequality Bad For Our Health? (New Democracy Forum) pdf
Description

In this election year, health care again proves to be one of our nation's most urgent issues. Daniels, Kennedy, and Kawachi shift the focus of the debate, forcing us to take a closer look at how our health is affected by social injustice and inequality. Arguing that it isn't enough to increase access to doctors, they call for improving social conditions-such as poverty, lack of education and affordable housing, and harmful work environments-that damage our health. By urging us to work toward equality of opportunity for all, the authors situate health care reform among the larger social problems we must face.

The authors' argument for reform in early childhood development, nutrition, work environment, and distribution of income is certain to spark debate. The editor of The New England Journal of Medicine and World Health Organization officials respond.

Hazards of the Job pdf
Description

Hazards of the Job explores the roots of modern environmentalism in the early-twentieth-century United States. It was in the workplace of this era, argues Christopher Sellers, that our contemporary understanding of environmental health dangers first took shape. At the crossroads where medicine and science met business, labor, and the state, industrial hygiene became a crucible for molding midcentury notions of corporate interest and professional disinterest as well as environmental concepts of the 'normal' and the 'natural.' The evolution of industrial hygiene illuminates how powerfully battles over knowledge and objectivity could reverberate in American society: new ways of establishing cause and effect begat new predicaments in medicine, law, economics, politics, and ethics, even as they enhanced the potential for environmental control. From the 1910s through the 1930s, as Sellers shows, industrial hygiene investigators fashioned a professional culture that gained the confidence of Download Hazards of the Job for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

Healing America pdf
Description

In this book a physician long involved in health policy issues at the national level presents a wise, achievable vision for American health care. From his wide ranging professional experiences and his personal experiences with three life threatening illnesses, he charts a uniquely American “epidemiology of hope” that flows from the country’s vast medical research investments and technology transfer capabilities; challenges patients and health professionals alike to recognize a central decision making role for the patient on the healing team; and offers thought-provoking insights into physician-patient communication, the placebo effect, suffering, dealing with death and dying, and the nature of the social contract between those in the healing business and those seeking to be healed. Most important, after provocatively grading American health care from B-plus to D in relation to hope, mercy, justice, and autonomy, the book proposes a new metric, the Organizational Therapeutic Index Download Healing America for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

A Shared Destiny pdf
Description

"A Shared Destiny" is the fourth in a series of six reports on the problems of uninsurance in the United States. This report examines how the quality, quantity, and scope of community health services can be adversely affected by having a large or growing uninsured population. It explores the overlapping financial and organizational basis of health services delivery to uninsured and insured populations, the effects of community uninsurance on access to health care locally, and the potential spillover effects on a community's economy and the health of its citizens. The committee believes - it is both mistaken and dangerous to assume that the persistence of a sizable uninsured population in the United States harms only those who are uninsured. Project Management in Health and Community Services pdf
Description

In the health and community service industries, projects are increasingly used for the development of new services, and to achieve change in existing services, work practices and delivery models.

Until now, project workers in these fields have had to rely on books designed for architects, builders and IT administrators. This is the first textbook to take the principles of project management and place them into a context relevant for people working in health and community services. This book provides a critical guide to both the strategic and operational aspects of using projects and making them work.

Covering topics such as the lifecycle of a project, planning, execution and evaluation, risk management, change and effective teams, Project Management for Health and Community Services uses extensive international case studies and examples from the field.
