A History of the Charity Hospitals of Louisiana pdf
Description

This book is the first definitive, descriptive history of the Charity Hospital System of Louisiana to be published in a single volume. It is a story of how poverty, politics, public health, public interest, race, gender, and class, shaped the long history of one of the most storied public healthcare systems in the state and nation. The lack of a definitive published history of such a monumental and enduring system of acute-care hospitals was a major factor in the decision to write this book. A second factor was the inspiration derived from the work of the late John Salvaggio, a charity physician, who authored an excellent book, entitled "New Orleans' Charity Hospital: A Story of Physicians, Politics, and Poverty." Although Salvaggio's book helped fill the void in the literature on the charity hospitals, it only covered the New Orleans hospital, which is one of ten charity facilities in the state, and focused primarily on the role of physicians in the history of the hospital. The Genius Factory pdf
Description

It was the most radical human-breeding experiment in American history, and no one knew how it turned out. The Repository for Germinal Choice–nicknamed the Nobel Prize sperm bank–opened to notorious fanfare in 1980, and for two decades, women flocked to it from all over the country to choose a sperm donor from its roster of Nobel-laureate scientists, mathematical prodigies, successful businessmen, and star athletes. But the bank quietly closed its doors in 1999–its founder dead, its confidential records sealed, and the fate of its children and donors unknown. In early 2001, award-winning columnist David Plotz set out to solve the mystery of the Nobel Prize sperm bank.

Plotz wrote an article for Slate inviting readers to contact him–confidentially–if they knew anything about the bank. The next morning, he received an email response, then another, and another–each person desperate to talk about something they had kept hidden for years. Now, in The Genius Factory, Plotz Download The Genius Factory for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

MEDICINE & CHARITY BEFORE CL (Studies in the Social History of Medicine) pdf
Description

"Medicine and Charity Before the Welfare State" offers a broad perspective on the relationship between charity and medicine in Western Europe between the Middle Ages and the advent of welfare states in the 20th century. Medical history is analyzed not just as an integral part of social history, but as offering a powerful insight into relations between donors, practitioners, patients and the wider society. Through detailed case studies, the authors highlight significant differences between Britain, France, Italy and Germany, and offer a critical vocabulary for grasping the issues raised. The publication of this book reflects recent developments relating to the role of charity in medicine, particularly the revival of interest in the place of voluntary provision in contemporary social policy. It emphasizes the changing balance of "care" and "cure" as the aim of medical charity, and shows how economic and political factors influenced the varying forms of charity. Linda Cheryl Conley-McCray was shocked when she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, because she knew of no one in her family that had this disease. She had previously worked as a public safety officer for a large urban school system for over fifteen years. When doctors asked about her family¿s medical history, she could not answer all of their questions. When she could no longer button her clothes or grasp a pencil, Conley-McCray knew she must learn more about this disease to help her overcome it. She became adept at asking questions of her doctors, listing her ailments and medications, documenting her family¿s medical history to the best of her ability, and sharing this recorded information with her family. She encourages everyone to investigate, record, and share family medical history. Possessing your family¿s current, documented health history provides a powerful tool for your children and grandchildren, supplying them with information concerning what ailments run in the fa Download THE FAMILY MEDICAL HISTORY JOURNAL for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

Health and Society in Britain since 1939 (New Studies in Economic and Social History) pdf
Description

British health policy has undergone radical change in the postwar period and Virginia Berridge provides here a concise and accessible survey of these changes since 1939. While the rise, and recent decline, of the NHS is examined in detail, this book also looks at the changes in the role of doctors and associated medical professions, and the recent emphasis on "health promotion" and "primary care." Also considered are the role that lay people, especially women, play in providing health care, and the transition of the individual from "patient" to "consumer." Committed to the State Asylum pdf
Description

Committed to the State Asylum examines the evolution of the asylum as the response to insanity in nineteenth-century Quebec and Ontario. Focusing on the creation and development of government-funded asylums for the insane - among the largest and most important nineteenth-century institutions in both provinces - James Moran argues that asylum development was the result of complex relationships among a wide array of people, including state inspectors and administrators, asylum doctors, local magistrates, jail surgeons, religious authorities, and the relatives and neighbours of those who were considered to be insane. Unlike other studies, Committed to the State Asylum shows the important role that the community played in shaping the asylum and tackles the thorny issue of state development, explaining how state asylums developed differently in each province. Moran considers Canada's pioneering institutional efforts at dealing with the criminally insane and why those efforts lasted only a Download Committed to the State Asylum for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

A Social History of Dying pdf
Description

Our experiences of dying have been shaped by ancient ideas about death and social responsibility at the end of life. From Stone Age ideas about dying as otherworld journey to the contemporary Cosmopolitan Age of dying in nursing homes, Allan Kellehear takes the reader on a 2 million year journey of discovery that covers the major challenges we will all eventually face: anticipating, preparing, taming and timing for our eventual deaths. This is a major review of the human and clinical sciences literature about human dying conduct. The historical approach of this book places our recent images of cancer dying and medical care in broader historical, epidemiological and global context. Professor Kellehear argues that we are witnessing a rise in shameful forms of dying. It is not cancer, heart disease or medical science that presents modern dying conduct with its greatest moral tests, but rather poverty, ageing and social exclusion. War, Politics, and Philanthropy pdf
Description

War, Politics, and Philanthropy: The History of Rehabilitation Medicine describes the development of this remarkable field of medical care from its inception in WWI and WWII through its dramatic expansion during the 1980s, as stimulated by the Medicare program. The book vividly describes how the field developed in response to the need for care and rehabilitation of wounded soldiers, disabled veterans, and members of the workforce in the 1940s and 1950s. It focuses on the leadership and contributions of statesman Bernard Baruch, civil servant extraordinaire Mary Switzer, physicians Henry Kessler, Frank Krusen, and Howard Rusk, and the professional and disability associations with which they collaborated. The book ends with the crescendo of the enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which embodied the vision and goals of rehabilitation medicine since the 1960s. Nursing before Nightingale, 18151899 (The History of Medicine in Context) pdf
Description

"Nursing Before Nightingale" is a study of the transformation of nursing in England from the beginning of the nineteenth century until the emergence of the Nightingale nurse as the standard model in the 1890s. From the nineteenth century on historians have considered Florence Nightingale, with her training school established at St. Thomas' Hospital in 1860, the founder of modern nursing. This book investigates two major earlier reforms in nursing: a doctor-driven reform which came to be called the 'ward system,' and the reforms of the Anglican Sisters, known as the 'central system' of nursing. Rather than being the beginning of nursing reform, Nightingale nursing was the culmination of these two earlier reforms. Recent historians of nursing have ascribed the nineteenth century makeover of nursing to two causes: medicalization by hospital doctors who found the old independent nurse practitioners a threat, and the inculcation of middle class values by philanthropists. By contrast this vo Download Nursing before Nightingale, 18151899 (The History of Medicine in Context) for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

Fragments of Neurological History pdf
Description

This highly interesting collection of historical articles started as a series of "space-fillers", the journalist's device to mitigate the harshness of white space at the end of scientific papers. The author has expanded these short essays and included several additional articles and biographical reviews. He has also incorporated some longer, more discursive essays, which should be relevant to neurologists, physicians and those working in internal medicine and psychiatry. The reader attracted to medical and neurological history should find much of interest in these diverse topics.
