The political economy of health care pdf
Description

Written by distinguished doctor and author Julian Tudor Hart, this is a passionate, polemical book on the historical development, current state, and potential future shape of the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). Drawing on many years of clinical experience, the author explores how the NHS might be reconstituted as a humane service for all, rather than a profitable one for the few, and as a civilizing influence on society as a whole. The book’s starting point is an attack on the creeping commercialization of the health service, which involves the privatization of a growing number of spheres and the application of market economics to procurement, delivery, and management. Combining clinical, political, and economic arguments, the author then proposes his own economic analysis of the NHS, derived not from classical theory but from experience of the real health care economy. The Political Economy of Health Care will inspire students, academics, health professionals, and NHS users to Download The political economy of health care for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

Caring for People with Chronic Conditions pdf
Description

"Overall, the book walks a delicate balance between evidence and advocacy regarding the care of people with chronic conditions. Nolte and McKee conclude the volume with the following: 'A first step is to recognize that something must be done. A second, which we hope will be facilitated by the evidence provided in this book, is to realize that something actually can be done, and that they can do it (p. 240)'. The overarching desire to match the need for evidence with the reality that advocates (including policy-makers) need a reasoned voice makes the book well suited to health policy deliberations."

Behavioral Medicine in Primary Care pdf
Description

This textbook provides strategies for primary care health professionals to apply behavioral medicine principles and concepts. Many behavioral medicine textbooks assume a Western care model, where providers receive behavioral health training and have access to behavioral medicine specialists. However, providers who care for patients from diverse cultures and ethnic backgrounds may need to take a different approach. Behavioral Medicine in Primary Care recognizes this, enabling physicians, social workers and others unfamiliar with behavioral medicine to meet the mental and behavioral health needs of their patients. Its focus on patients from multiple settings and cultures and its comprehensive, practical format illustrate skills that can be applied immediately wherever care is being provided. It is aimed at everyone seeing patients for primary health care purposes, including physicians, assistant physicians, nurses, midwives, social workers, whether at community health cente Download Behavioral Medicine in Primary Care for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

Health-Care Reform pdf
Description

In this study, Dr. Ashraf A. Hilmy, with a surgeon's objective, no-nonsense precision and an unabashed lack of political correctness, dissects the current state of health-care delivery in America. In practice since 1979, he is board certified in surgery, anesthesiology, critical-care medicine, and health-care administration. He received an MBA from the University of Texas, Pan Am with an emphasis on health-care administration. He has served as both chief of surgery and staff at several institutions and has practiced in every scale of facility-solo, partnership, and group practice. Dr. Hilmy is uniquely qualified to render an informed opinion about health care in the United States. In his professional judgment, there is no question that the current system is faltering and in need of radical reform. No other country in the world spends so much on health care and has so little to show for it. A Cost-Benefit Analysis of Case Management Activities for Diabetes pdf
Description

The economic and human costs of diabetes in the U.S. population place an enormous burden on its healthcare system as well as on employers, diabetics, and their respective families. Many Medicare Advantage plans have responded to this burden by implementing diabetes case management programs (DCMPs) aimed at reducing inappropriate health services utilization, improving health outcomes, and containing costs. While the use of DCMPs is common to many health plans, the research regarding their effectiveness has been sparse or inconclusive. The purpose of this study was to help fill a critical gap in the research literature by evaluating the effect of a diabetes case management program known as CareContact on a Medicare population in Texas. The study population consisted of 2,972 confirmed diabetic members who were continuously enrolled in SelectCare of Texas, a Medicare Advantage plan, for the two-year period between January 1, 2005 and December 31, 2006. Description

In recent years, a number of large population-based biobanks – genetic databases that combine genetic information derived from blood samples with personal data about environment, medical history, lifestyle or genealogy – have been set up in order to study the interface between disease, and genetic and environmental factors. Unsurprisingly, these studies have sparked a good deal of controversy and the ethical and social implications have been widely debated. Biobanks: Governance in Comparative Perspective is the first book to explore the political and governance implications of biobanks in Europe, the United States, Asia, and Australia. Social Determinants of Health in Countries in Conflict pdf
Description

Social inequality is widely recognized as an important cause of conflict and the social determinants of health in conflict settings reflect and reinforce these inequalities. This publication explores the impact of conflict and occupation on the health of people in six countries of the region, identifying loss of human rights, breaches of medical neutrality and psychosocial distress as key determinants that affect people’s health in crisis settings. The publication also identifies some examples of activities and interventions that may help to mitigate the impact of these conflicts on the health and well-being of affected populations, as well as policy implications for all concerned parties.

Medicine, Rationality and Experience pdf
Description

Medicine supposedly offers a scientific account of the human body and of illness, and it follows that scientific medicine treats all forms of folk medicine as little more than superstitious practices. Professor Good argues that this impoverished perspective neglects many facets of Western medical practice and obscures its kinship with healing in other traditions. Drawing on his own anthropological research in America and the Middle East, his analysis of illness and medicine explores the role of cultural factors in the experience of illness and the practice of medicine. Health and Work Under Capitalism pdf
Description

While the health effects of many aspects of life, from diet to marital status, have been extensively explored, little study has been made of the health effects of work. Covering such topics as on-the-job dangers, the role of unions in worker protection, and occupational health in both developed and developing countries, this collection of articles conclusively demonstrates the negative impact that neglect of citizens' working lives has on pubic health. With more Americans dying each year from job-related causes than were killed in a decade of combat in Vietnam, Health and Work Under Capitalism is a long-overdue and unusually significant book.
