Powerful Medicines pdf
Description

If you believe that the latest blockbuster medication is worth a premium price over your generic brand, or that doctors have access to all the information they need about a drug’s safety and effectiveness each time they write a prescription, Dr. Jerry Avorn has some sobering news. Drawing on more than twenty-five years of patient care, teaching, and research at Harvard Medical School, he shares his firsthand experience of the wide gap in our knowledge of the effectiveness of one medication as compared to another. In Powerful Medicines, he reminds us that every pill we take represents a delicate compromise between the promise of healing, the risk of side effects, and an increasingly daunting price. The stakes on each front grow higher every year as new drugs with impressive power, worrisome side effects, and troubling costs are introduced.

This is a comprehensive behind-the-scenes look at issues that affect everyone: our shortage of data comparing the worth of similar drugs for Download Powerful Medicines for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

Inorganic and Organic Lead Compounds (IARC Monographs on the Evaluation of the Carcinogenic Risks to Humans) pdf
Description

This monograph re-evaluates the potential carcinogenic hazards to humans from exposure to inorganic and organic lead compounds. Human exposure comes from lead-contaminated air, dust, soil, water and food and through inhalation and ingestion. Recent human exposure has arisen predominantly from the widespread use of leaded gasoline. Occupations in which the highest potential exposure to lead exists include mining primary and secondary smelting, production of lead-acid batteries, pigment production, construction and demolition. In spite of the persistence of lead in the environment, exposures have decreased substantially in countries where lead control measures have been implemented over the past 10-30 years.

Coffee, Tea, Mate, Methylxanthines and Methylglyoxal (IARC Monographs on the Evaluation of the Carcinogenic Risks to Humans) pdf
Description

Reports the deliberations of a working group convened to evaluate the strength of evidence linking the drinking of coffee, tea, and mate to the development of human cancer. Separate evaluations are also provided for caffeine, theophylline theobromine and methylglyoxal, which are chemical constituents of coffee, tea, and several other popular beverages.

The first and most extensive monograph evaluates the large number of studies designed to assess the carcinogenic potential of coffee. On the basis of available data, the working group concluded that coffee is possibly carcinogenic to the human urinary bladder. Evidence further suggests that coffee may actually protect humans against cancer of the colon and rectum. The risk for breast cancer was shown, with remarkable consistency, to have no association with coffee drinking.

The second monograph evaluates the carcinogenicity of black and green teas. Although available data were judged inadequate to classif Download Coffee, Tea, Mate, Methylxanthines and Methylglyoxal (IARC Monographs on the Evaluation of the Carcinogenic Risks to Humans) for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

Comparative Quantification of Health Risks pdf
Description

During the last quarter of the twentieth century, a number of works have addressed both the methodological and empirical aspects of population-wide impacts of major causes of diseases. This gradual establishment of risk assessment, or risk quantification, has been driven partly by the academic curiosity of individual researchers and partly by the demands of regulatory agencies and public policy for better quantitative evidence on the health implications of certain risk exposures. These efforts nonetheless have generally been within the disciplinary and methodological traditions of individual risk factors and in a limited number of settings. As a result, the criteria for evaluating scientific evidence have varied greatly across risk factors resulting in lack of comparability across risk factors.

This book provides a comprehensive assessment of the scientific evidence on prevalence and hazards, and the resulting health effects, of a range of exposures that are known to be Download Comparative Quantification of Health Risks for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

Printing Processes and Printing Inks pdf
Description

Exposures in the printing industry are assessed according to their occurrence in printing ink manufacture and in printing operations such as letterpress lithography flexography gravure and screen-printing. Although many epidemiological studies have demonstrated some evidence of cancer risk in printing trades and printing industries the assessment found several important problems in the design of these studies. Occupational exposures in printing processes were classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans. Printing inks could not be classified.

The second monograph evaluates the carcinogenicity of carbon black an intense black pigment mainly used in tyres and other rubber automotive products and in many other rubber products. Although the evaluation found sufficient evidence in experimental animals that exposure to carbon black causes lung tumours data on carcinogenicity to humans were judged inadequate. Carbon black was classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans. The rem Download Printing Processes and Printing Inks for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

Hyping Health Risks pdf
Description

The media constantly bombard us with news of health hazards lurking in our everyday lives, but many of these hazards turn out to have been greatly overblown. According to author and epidemiologist Geoffrey C. Kabat, this hyping of low-level environmental hazards leads to needless anxiety and confusion on the part of the public concerning which exposures have important effects on health and which are likely to have minimal or no effect. Kabat approaches health scares as "social facts" and shows that a variety of factors can contribute to the inflating of a hazard. These include skewed reporting by the media, but also, surprisingly, the actions of researchers who may emphasize certain findings while ignoring others; regulatory and health agencies eager to show their responsiveness to the health concerns of the public; and politicians and advocates with a stake in a particular outcome. By means of four case studies, Kabat demonstrates how a powerful confluence of interests can lead to ove Download Hyping Health Risks for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

Dry-Cleaning, Some Chlorinated Solvents and Other Industrial Chemicals (IARC Monographs on the Evaluation of the Carcinogenic Risks to Humans) pdf
Description

Evaluates the carcinogenic risks to humans posed by exposures in the dry cleaning industry by eight chlorinated solvents and related chemicals and by an additional group of seven industrial chemicals. Dry cleaning is evaluated in the first and most extensive monograph. Concerning exposures to specific chemicals, tetrachloroethylene is identified as the most commonly used solvent during the last two to three decades. The evaluation also considers exposure to the wide range of chemicals used in the treatment of spots. A review of epidemiological studies on dry cleaning indicates that the risks for cancers at two cites, urinary bladder and esophagus, may be increased by employment in dry cleaning. The monograph concludes that dry cleaning entails exposures that are possibly carcinogenic to humans. A second group of monographs evaluates selected chlorinated solvents and related chemicals used in dry cleaning, metal cleaning, and degreasing as chemical intermediates and in the production of Download Dry-Cleaning, Some Chlorinated Solvents and Other Industrial Chemicals (IARC Monographs on the Evaluation of the Carcinogenic Risks to Humans) for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

Some Industrial Chemicals Volume 77 (IARC Monographs on the Evaluation of the Carcinogenic Risks to Humans) pdf
Description

Evaluates or re-evaluates the carcinogenic risks to humans posed by exposure to sixteen organic industrial chemicals. These included some aromatic amines (ortho-toluidine, 4-chloro-ortho-toluidine, and 5-chloro-ortho-toluidine), some ethanolamines (di- and triethanolamine and N-nitrosodiethanolamine), and three esters [di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), di(2-ethylhexyl) adipate, and cinnamyl anthranilate]. Seven of the sixteen compounds were evaluated in previous IARC Monographs and are reconsidered here in the light of new evidence.
Three chemicals were classified or reclassified as probably carcinogenic to humans: ortho-toluidine, 4-chloro-ortho-toluidine, and glycidol. Four compounds, evaluated here for the first time, namely 2,2-bis(bromomethyl)propane-1,3-diol, 2,3-dibromopropan-1-ol, ethylbenzene, and nitromethane, were classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans. Surgical Implants and Other Foreign Bodies (IARC Monographs on the Evaluation of the Carcinogenic Risks to Humans) pdf
Description

Evaluates the carcinogenic risks to humans of surgical implants and other foreign bodies. Foreign bodies are defined as any exogenous object that has been introduced into the tissues or cavities of the body and is not rapidly absorbed. The evaluation focuses on exposures caused by the presence in the body of a solid metallic or non-metallic object as a result either of surgery or of involuntary penetration, as through a war wound. Medical and dental devises are grouped together as metallic, non-metallic, and mixed materials, which have different profiles of biological activity.

The volume opens with a review of key concepts in the understanding of host-material interactions. Subsequent chapters evaluate human exposure data, evidence from case reports, and analytical studies for carcinogenicity in humans and in companion animals, evidence of carcinogenicity of implanted materials from animal experiments, and further background material on mechanisms of degradation and car Download Surgical Implants and Other Foreign Bodies (IARC Monographs on the Evaluation of the Carcinogenic Risks to Humans) for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

The Politics of Precaution pdf
Description

The Politics of Precaution examines the politics of consumer and environmental risk regulation in the United States and Europe over the last five decades, explaining why America and Europe have often regulated a wide range of similar risks differently. It finds that between 1960 and 1990, American health, safety, and environmental regulations were more stringent, risk averse, comprehensive, and innovative than those adopted in Europe. But since around 1990, the book shows, global regulatory leadership has shifted to Europe. What explains this striking reversal? David Vogel takes an in-depth, comparative look at European and American policies toward a range of consumer and environmental risks, including vehicle air pollution, ozone depletion, climate change, beef and milk hormones, genetically modified agriculture, antibiotics in animal feed, pesticides, cosmetic safety, and hazardous substances in electronic products. He traces how concerns over such risks--and pressure on political le Download The Politics of Precaution for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve
