Ethics and Security Aspects of Infectious Disease Control pdf
Description

The increasing emergence, re-emergence, and spread of deadly infectious diseases which pose health, economic, security and ethical challenges for states and people around the world, has given rise to an important global debate. The actual or potential burden of infectious diseases is sometimes so great that governments treat them as threats to national security. However, such treatment potentially increases the risk that emergency disease-control measures will be ineffective, counterproductive and/or unjust. Research on ethical issues associated with infectious disease is a relatively new and rapidly growing area of academic inquiry, as is research on infectious diseases within the field of security studies. This volume incorporates ethical and security perspectives, thus furthering research in both fields. Its unique focus on the intersection of ethical and security dimensions will, furthermore, generate fresh insights on how governments should respond to infectious disease challenge Download Ethics and Security Aspects of Infectious Disease Control for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

Pain Control and Drug Policy pdf
Description

Pain Control and Drug Policy: A Time for Change focuses on America's national crisis in pain management caused by the widening divergence between the enormous contributions of opioids ("narcotics") to pain management in the clinical setting and the mistaken belief that they are dangerous, highly addictive drugs. After dissecting the strategy and tactics of the War on Drugs from medical, historical, legal, socioeconomic, and geopolitical perspectives, Guy Faguet MD indicts the 40-year-long War on Drugs for having triggered a pain management crisis in the United States that dictates how pain physicians can prescribe opioids and violates the basic human right to pain relief of tens of millions of American chronic pain sufferers despite its failure to stem the supply of illicit drugs, despite expenditures of half a trillion dollars, and despite fomenting organized crime, government corruption, racial injustice, and social disruption in both the United States and the producer countries. Description

When it comes to infection control, compliance is difficult, but the stakes are high. It's one of the biggest challenges your facility faces: Under F-Tag #441, nursing homes must "establish and maintain an infection control program designed to provide a safe, sanitary, and comfortable environment and to help prevent the development and transmission of disease and infection." With residents frail and at a greater risk for infections such as MSRA, c. difficile, urinary tract infections (UTI), and, according to the Centers for Disease Control, pandemic flu virus, an effective infection control program is crucial--yet nursing homes often lack the resources to identify and control infection. Risks are increasingly regulated by international standards, and scientists play a key role in standardization. This fascinating book exposes the action of 'invisible colleges' of scientists loose groups of prominent scientific experts who combine practical experience of risk and control with advisory responsibility in the formulation of international standards. Drawing upon the domains of medicines, 'novel foods' and food hygiene, David Demortain investigates new regulatory concepts emerging from invisible colleges, highlighting how they shape consensus and pave the way for international standards. Statistical Process Control for Health Care pdf
Description

This book teaches and illustrates the use of SPC (Statistical Process Control) techniques for healthcare professionals. SPC techniques allow these professionals to properly extract information from healthcare data, make intelligent decisions based on statistical data, and know if the data has been presented in an appropriate manner. Using a case study approach, the authors present the theory, computations (hand and computer), and application (case study) for each concept. In recent years, SPC has been proven effective in improving the quality of health care, just as it has in other service industries and in manufacturing. Manual of Infection Prevention and Control pdf
Description

It has been estimated that in developed countries up to 10% of hospitalized patients develop infections every year. Not only is there a substantial cost to healthcare systems, but some healthcare associated infections (HCIAs) can be fatal. Since the majority of HCIAs are preventable, reducing HCIAs is now considered to be an integral part of patient safety and quality of care provided by all healthcare institutions worldwide.

Unlike other books on infection control, the main strength of this book is to provide clear, up-to-date and practical guidance in infection control in an easy to read format which can act as a quick source of reference on all aspects of HCIA for healthcare workers who are either directly or indirectly involved in prevention and control of HCIAs. Although the book's main audience is infection control practitioners such as doctors, nurses, public health physicians, it is also a valuable reference for environmental health officers, health educators, practice m Download Manual of Infection Prevention and Control for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

Budget Control Act pdf
Description

The Budget Control Act of 2011 (BCA; P.L. 112-25) established new budget enforcement mechanisms for reducing the federal deficit by at least .1 trillion over the 10-year period FY2012-FY2021. The BCA places statutory limits, or caps, on discretionary spending for each of those 10 fiscal years, which will save an estimated .9 trillion during that period. In addition, it creates a Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction (Joint Committee), which is instructed to develop legislation to reduce the federal deficit by at least another .5 trillion through FY2021. If Congress and the President are unable to enact a Joint Committee bill by January 15, 2012, that reduces the deficit by at least .2 trillion over the period FY2012-FY2021, then automatic annual spending reductions would be triggered beginning in FY2013. They would be achieved by lowering the caps on discretionary spending and by an automatic across-the-board cancellation of budgetary resources (i.e., spending cuts) for n Download Budget Control Act for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

From Chaos to Coercion pdf
Description

In the 1980s and early 1990s, New York City experienced an unprecedented outbreak of tuberculosis. Inadequate healthcare services, an increase in social alienation of the poor, and the emergence of drug-resistant strains led city health officials to respond with draconian policies to ensure compliance, including the use of detention of non-infectious individuals--sometimes for up to two years--that violated individual civil liberties. The New York TB epidemic has since been controlled, but this public health triumph has come at great cost. This gripping narrative of medicine and morality raises ethical issues that are of increasing importance in the world of modern medicine. Richard J. Coker warns the international community against assuming a fortress mentality, advocating a more just balance between health, liberty, and the burdens society should be prepared to accept in the pursuit of both.
