Ethics and Security Aspects of Infectious Disease Control pdf
Description

The increasing emergence, re-emergence, and spread of deadly infectious diseases which pose health, economic, security and ethical challenges for states and people around the world, has given rise to an important global debate. The actual or potential burden of infectious diseases is sometimes so great that governments treat them as threats to national security. However, such treatment potentially increases the risk that emergency disease-control measures will be ineffective, counterproductive and/or unjust. Research on ethical issues associated with infectious disease is a relatively new and rapidly growing area of academic inquiry, as is research on infectious diseases within the field of security studies. This volume incorporates ethical and security perspectives, thus furthering research in both fields. Its unique focus on the intersection of ethical and security dimensions will, furthermore, generate fresh insights on how governments should respond to infectious disease challenge Download Ethics and Security Aspects of Infectious Disease Control for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

Infectious Ideas pdf
Description

Viewing contemporary history from the perspective of the AIDS crisis, Jennifer Brier provides rich, new understandings of the United States' complex social and political trends in the post-1960s era. Brier describes how AIDS workers--in groups as disparate as the gay and lesbian press, AIDS service organizations, private philanthropies, and the State Department--influenced American politics, especially on issues such as gay and lesbian rights, reproductive health, racial justice, and health care policy, even in the face of the expansion of the New Right. Infectious Ideas places recent social, cultural, and political events in a new light, making an important contribution to our understanding of the United States at the end of the twentieth century. The Anthropology of Infectious Disease pdf
Description

Anthropological contributions to the study of infectious disease and to the study of actual infectious disease eradication programmes have rarely been collected in one volume. In the era of AIDS and the global resurgance of infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and malaria, there is widespread interest and concern about the cultural, ecological and political factors that are directly related to the increased prevalence of infectious disease. In this book, the authors have assembled the growing scholarship in one volume. Chapters explore the coevolution of genes and cultural traits; the cultural construction of 'disease' and how these models influence health-seeking behaviour; cultural adaptive strategies to infectious disease problems; the ways in which ethnography sheds light on epidemiological patterns of infectious disease; the practical and ethical dilemmas that anthropologists face by participating in infectious disease programmes; and the political ecology of infectious diseas Download The Anthropology of Infectious Disease for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

China's Capacity to Manage Infectious Diseases pdf
Description

During the Seventeenth Party Congress in October 2007, it was clear that improving health care in China had become a political priority for the country's leadership. Three decades of double-digit economic growth had not been matched by progress in China's ability to prevent and treat diseases. The rudimentary Maoist-era health care infrastructure had largely collapsed in the reformist years of Deng Xiaoping and Jiang Zemin, and by the time Hu Jintao took office in 2002, it was in tatters, particularly in rural China. At the same time, the socioeconomic changes wrought by China's economic explosion and openness to the outside world created enormous new health care challenges and strains on the country's capacity to manage them. As part of his government's efforts to reduce social inequities resulting from 30 years of runaway growth, Hu made improving China s health care system a priority. The SARS crisis of 2003 was a catalyzing period for China, and since then Beijing s blueprint fo Download China's Capacity to Manage Infectious Diseases for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

Infectious Fear pdf
Description

For most of the first half of the twentieth century, tuberculosis ranked among the top three causes of mortality among urban African Americans. Often afflicting an entire family or large segments of a neighborhood, the plague of TB was as mysterious as it was fatal. Samuel Kelton Roberts Jr. examines how individuals and institutions—black and white, public and private—responded to the challenges of tuberculosis in a segregated society. Reactionary white politicians and health officials promoted "racial hygiene" and sought to control TB through Jim Crow quarantines, Roberts explains. African Americans, in turn, protested the segregated, overcrowded housing that was the true root of the tuberculosis problem. Moderate white and black political leadership reconfigured definitions of health and citizenship, extending some rights while constraining others. Meanwhile, those who suffered with the disease—as its victims or as family and neighbors—made the daily adjustments required by t Download Infectious Fear for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

West Nile Encephalitis Virus Infection pdf
Description

West Nile virus has emerged globally as a significant cause of viral encephalitis in humans. Infection of humans is associated with a febrile illness that can progress to meningitis and encephalitis with symptoms including cognitive dysfunction and flaccid paralysis. Following its introduction to the United States in 1999, West Nile virus rapidly disseminated across North America. Outbreaks of West Nile virus fever and neuroinvasive disease now occur annually in the United States, with about 23,000 diagnosed human cases between 1999 and 2006. The emergence of West Nile virus in the Western hemisphere and the corresponding increase in disease burden has been accompanied by intensive study. West Nile Encephalitis Virus Infection: Viral Pathogenesis and the Host Immune Response focuses on recent studies that have identified key steps in the molecular pathogenesis of West Nile virus infection. Mathematical Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases pdf
Description

Mathematical Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases Model Building, Analysis and Interpretation O. Diekmann University of Utrecht, The Netherlands J. A. P. Heesterbeek Centre for Biometry Wageningen, The Netherlands The mathematical modelling of epidemics in populations is a vast and important area of study. It is about translating biological assumptions into mathematics, about mathematical analysis aided by interpretation and about obtaining insight into epidemic phenomena when translating mathematical results back into population biology. Model assumptions are formulated in terms of, usually stochastic, behaviour of individuals and then the resulting phenomena, at the population level, are unravelled. Conceptual clarity is attained, assumptions are stated clearly, hidden working hypotheses are attained and mechanistic links between different observables are exposed. Features:
* Model construction, analysis and interpretation receive detailed attention
* Uniquely covers both determ Download Mathematical Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

Analysis of Infectious Disease Data (Chapman & Hall/CRC Monographs on Statistics & Applied Probability) pdf
Description

The analysis of infectious disease data requires separate attention because standard methods of statistical inference cannot be applied directly. The reasons for this are, that infectious disease data are highly dependent and, that the infection process is only partially observable. In this book these difficulties are overcome by making appropriate model assumptions, by incorporating into the analysis the known mechanism of disease spread by means of a model and thus obtaining a more efficient analysis as well as directing attention at epidemiologically meaningful parameters.
