Disease eradication represents the ultimate in global equity and the definitive outcome of good public health practice. Thirty years ago, the elimination of smallpox defined disease eradication as a monumental global achievement with lasting benefits for society. Today, the global commitment to eradicate polio and guinea worm and heightened interest in the potential eradication of other infectious diseases, including measles/rubella, lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis, and malaria, dominate public health concerns. But what does it take to eradicate a disease? This book takes a fresh look at the evolving concepts of disease eradication, influenced by scientific advances, field experience, societal issues, and economic realities. Health and Economic Growth pdf
Description

While human capital is a clear determinant of economic growth, only recently has health's role in this process become a focus of serious academic inquiry. By marrying the separate fields of health economics and growth theory, this groundbreaking book explores the explicit mechanisms by which a population's individual and collective health status affects a nation's economic development and performance. International leaders from both fields have contributed original essays that employ theoretical and empirical perspectives on the relationship between health and economic growth, including the relevant interconnections with investment in education, family planning, and productivity. Each of the book's five sections deals with a different aspect of this dynamic. These include the channels through which health human capital generates Download Health and Economic Growth for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

Social Inequalities in Health pdf
Description

Health inequalities according to people's social standing are persisting, or even growing, in modern societies. Recent decades have revealed evidence of strong variations in life expectancy, both between countries and within them. This widening of social inequalities has developed despite considerable progress in medical science and an increase in health care spending. The reasons behind this are complex, and the implications considerable. This book provides a summary of the major achievements of a five-year European Science Foundation (E.S.F.) Programme on 'Social Variations in Health Expectancy in Europe'. The contributors are major figures in their subjects, and combine state of the art reviews with the latest results from interdisciplinary research in epidemiology, sociology, psychology and biomedicine. Three conceptual frameworks of life course influences, health effects of stressful environments, and macro social determinants of health, are unified, while each chapter addresses t Download Social Inequalities in Health for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

China's Capacity to Manage Infectious Diseases pdf
Description

During the Seventeenth Party Congress in October 2007, it was clear that improving health care in China had become a political priority for the country's leadership. Three decades of double-digit economic growth had not been matched by progress in China's ability to prevent and treat diseases. The rudimentary Maoist-era health care infrastructure had largely collapsed in the reformist years of Deng Xiaoping and Jiang Zemin, and by the time Hu Jintao took office in 2002, it was in tatters, particularly in rural China. At the same time, the socioeconomic changes wrought by China's economic explosion and openness to the outside world created enormous new health care challenges and strains on the country's capacity to manage them. As part of his government's efforts to reduce social inequities resulting from 30 years of runaway growth, Hu made improving China s health care system a priority. The SARS crisis of 2003 was a catalyzing period for China, and since then Beijing s blueprint fo Download China's Capacity to Manage Infectious Diseases for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

Private Health Sector Growth in Asia pdf
Description

At the end of the twentieth century, Asia is in the middle of an economic, political, and social transformation. Many countries are poised to enter the next century on a rising curve of rapid economic growth and human resource development. Despite an increasing proportion of national income devoted to health, government resources are not sufficient to maintain existing health systems, meet increased demand, and improve the quality of care. Attitudes about the role of government in financing health care services have also changed. As a result, many countries in Asia have adopted a strategy of encouraging the expansion of the private health sector in health. This book describes these policy shifts and the health sector reform issues in the countries of the region. The actual process of change in six countries: India; Indonesia; Korea; the Philippines; Thailand; and Vietnam is also documented. Exposure of the American People to Iodine-131 from Nevada Nuclear-Bomb Tests pdf
Description

In 1997, after more than a decade of research, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) released a report which provided their assessment of radiation exposures that Americans may have received from radioactive iodine released from the atomic bomb tests conducted in Nevada during the 1950s and early 1960s. This book provides an evaluation of the soundness of the methodology used by the NCI study to estimate: past radiation doses; possible health consequences of exposure to iodine-131; implications for clinical practice; and possible public health strategies - such as systematic screening for thyroid cancer - to respond to the exposures. In addition, the book provides an evaluation of the NCI estimates of the number of thyroid cancers that might result from the nuclear testing program and provides guidance on approaches the U.S. government might use to communicate with the public about Iodine-131 exposures and health risks.
