Combined Analyses of Cancer Mortality Among Nuclear Workers in Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States (IARC Technical Reports) pdf
Description

Reports the results of an analysis of combined mortality data on 95,673 nuclear industry workers at seven facilities in the USA, UK and Canada. Workers at these facilities, which include both atomic energy stations and nuclear weapons plants, have been monitored in previous studies to determine the health effects of external exposure to ionizing radiation. By combining and assessing data from previous studies, the present analysis aimed to develop more precise estimates of the risk of radiation-induced cancer and thus to strengthen the scientific basis for setting radiation protection standards. The study also compared risk estimates among workers with estimates obtained in high-dose studies, including investigations of atomic bomb survivors and of patients irradiated for therapeutic purposes. The results represent the most comprehensive and precise direct assessment to date of the carcinogenic risk of protracted external exposure to generally low doses of ionizing radiation. A Crisis Call for New Preventive Medicine pdf
Description

Of the ten most common causes of death in industrialized countries, at least two-thirds are lifestyle related (i.e. poor nutrition, physical inactivity, overweight/obesity, cigarette smoking, alcohol/drug abuse and the environment, among others). The rapidly expanding elder population will put further demands on health care systems already burdened by the elderly and the poor. However, increasing age need not be associated with expanding health care costs if people improve their lifestyles. Healthier lifestyles would significantly reduce the incidence of coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, peripheral vascular disease, cataract and macular degeneration, among others. Moreover, they would significantly increase life expectancy and the quality of life. This invaluable book reviews the scientific medical evidence for the benefits of healthy lifestyles on ageing, numerous diseases/disorders, and reduction of medical costs. Behind International Rankings of Infant Mortality pdf
Description

Infant mortality is an important indicator of the health of a nation, and the recent stagnation (since 2000) in the U.S. infant mortality rate has generated concern among researchers and policy makers. The percentage of preterm births in the United States has risen 36% since 1984 (1). In this report we compare infant mortality rates between the United States and Europe. We also compare two factors that determine the infant mortality rate—gestational age-specific infant mortality rates and the percentage of preterm births. U.S. data are from the Linked Birth/Infant Death Data Set (2,3), and European data for 2004 are from the recently published European Perinatal Health Report (4). We also examine requirements for reporting a live birth among countries to assess the possible effect of reporting differences on infant mortality data. Global Burden of Disease pdf
Description

The Global Burden of Disease and Injury Series details and analyzes global patterns of death and disability, providing a bold, comprehensive examination of the state of the world's health. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) provides systematic epidemiological estimates for an unprecedented 150 major health conditions. Its methods and results are presented here, including: disaggregated death and disability data; projections to the year 2020; and risk factor evaluations. While it minutely examines causes of death, the GBD is unique in its inclusion of disability. The authors explore the technical bases and moral implications of incorporating social, physical, and mental disabilities in health assessments, explicating the indicator they have developed, the disability-adjusted life-year (DALY). The GBD provides indispensable global and regional data for health planning, research, and education. Among the study's results: Depression was the fourth leading cause of disease-burden in Download Global Burden of Disease for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

The encyclopedic Global Health Statistics provides, for the first time, epidemiological estimates for all major diseases and injuries. As part of the Global Burden of Disease project, over 100 disease experts analyzed these data, collected from exhaustive searches of registration data and published and unpublished studies. Formatted for English, French, and Spanish readers, the figures are displayed in a comprehensive set of tables, presenting for over 200 causes estimates of mortality, incidence, prevalence, durations, and average ages of onset in 1990--all disaggregated by age, sex, and region. Demographic tables and projections of deaths and death rates are also provided. This succinct data-set provides for the general reader the set of tools necessary to understand disease and injury f Download Global Health Statistics for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

Body of Work pdf
Description

A hauntingly moving memoir of the relationship between a cadaver named Eve and the first-year medical student who cuts her open Christine Montross was a nervous first-year medical student, standing outside the anatomy lab on her first day of class, preparing herself for what was to come. Entering a room with stainless-steel tables topped by corpses in body bags is shocking no matter how long you've prepared yourself, but a strange thing happened when Montross met her cadaver. Instead of being disgusted by her, she was utterly intrigued-intrigued by the person the woman once was, humbled by the sacrifice she had made in donating her body to science, fascinated by the strange, unsettling beauty of the human form. They called her Eve. This is the story of Montross and Eve-the student and the subject-and the surprising relationship that grew between them. Body of Work is a mesmerizing, rarely seen glimpse into the day-to-day life of a medical student-yet one that follows naturally in the f Download Body of Work for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve
