Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy for Traumatic Brain Injury pdf
Description

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) may affect 10 million people worldwide. It is considered the "signature wound" of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. These injuries result from a bump or blow to the head, or from external forces that cause the brain to move within the head, such as whiplash or exposure to blasts. TBI can cause an array of physical and mental health concerns and is a growing problem, particularly among soldiers and veterans because of repeated exposure to violent environments. One form of treatment for TBI is cognitive rehabilitation therapy (CRT), a patient-specific, goal-oriented approach to help patients increase their ability to process and interpret information. The Department of Defense asked the IOM to conduct a study to determine the effectiveness of CRT for treatment of TBI. Injury Prevention: An International Perspective pdf
Description

Throughout the world, injuries are the leading cause of death for young adults, adolescents, and children. Injury death and hospitalization are also high among the elderly. With the improved prevention and treatment of infectious and degenerative diseases, the importance of injuries as a debilitating factor has rapidly increased around the world. Better living conditions have decreased the number of some types of injuries--such as drownings and burns--but the proliferation of new, high-energy vehicles, machinery, and weapons has offset this trend by significantly increasing the number of other types of injuries.
This book documents the nature and magnitude of the problem and provides basic approaches to injury prevention. Injury statistics are supplied for many developing countries and indigenous populations as well as for industrialized nations. Important differences among countries and cultures affecting the types and circumstances of injury are illustrated in tables and figures t Download Injury Prevention: An International Perspective for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve

The Injury Fact Book pdf
Description

This is a comprehensive but concise reference that documents the nature and importance of the injury problem in the United States. For each of more than sixty causes of injury, data are presented by age, race, sex, geographic area, urban/rural residence, and per capita income. The second edition includes new chapters on injuries related to sports, work, aviation, and large trucks. Also new are many analyses subdivided by four racial groups as well as age and sex, made possible by the use of mortality data from a seven year period. The updated analyses of time trends throughout the book document major reductions in death rates over the past decade. As a statistical compilation, the book offers users a quick reference to valuable detail, much of which would otherwise be inaccessible. It also discusses reasons for many of the extreme differences among groups of people in injury death rates and describes promising avenues to prevention. Global Burden of Disease pdf
Description

The Global Burden of Disease and Injury Series details and analyzes global patterns of death and disability, providing a bold, comprehensive examination of the state of the world's health. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) provides systematic epidemiological estimates for an unprecedented 150 major health conditions. Its methods and results are presented here, including: disaggregated death and disability data; projections to the year 2020; and risk factor evaluations. While it minutely examines causes of death, the GBD is unique in its inclusion of disability. The authors explore the technical bases and moral implications of incorporating social, physical, and mental disabilities in health assessments, explicating the indicator they have developed, the disability-adjusted life-year (DALY). The GBD provides indispensable global and regional data for health planning, research, and education. Injury Research pdf
Description

Injury is recognized as a major public health issue worldwide. In most countries, injury is the leading cause of death and disability for children and young adults age 1 to 39 years. Each year in the United States, injury claims about 170,000 lives and results in over 30 million emergency room visits and 2.5 million hospitalizations. Injury is medically defined as organ/tissue damages inflicted upon oneself or by an external agent either accidentally or deliberately. Injury encompasses the undesirable consequences of a wide array of events, such as motor vehicle crashes, poisoning, burns, falls, and drowning, medical error, adverse effects of drugs, suicide and homicide. The past two decades have witnessed a remarkable growth in injury research, both in scope and in depth. To address the tremendous health burden of injury morbidity and mortality at the global level, the World Health Organization in 2000 created the Department of Injury and Violence Prevention, which has produced severa Download Injury Research for free via rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, dropBox, uploading, fileserve
